Climate Targets Will Not Save Coral Reefs

A story in today's BBC News highlights a report by a UN-backed project, The Economics of Ecosystems and Biodiversity Analysis (or TEEB) designed to quantify the economic costs of damaging nature.

TEEB reports that an atmospheric CO2 concentration of 450 ppm (16% above current levels) will devastate coral reefs.

60% of coral reefs could be lost – even by 2030 – through fishing, pollution, diseases, invasive alien species and coral bleaching due to climate change.

This projection is largely based on the work of Hughes et al. (2003).
